Pilot project for seismic underground exploration with trains as an energy source

The Geophysics department has just completed DAS (Distributed Acoustic Sensing) data acquisition for Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) to characterize the shallow subsurface along a 7 km long rail section north of Vienna. This pilot project aims at seismic imaging using trains as sources and is complemented by calibration measurements using conventional active MASW techniques (Multi-channel analysis of surface waves) and passive nodal receivers. Stay tuned for results!

We would like to thank the staff of the Montanuniversität Leoben and the Austrian Institute of Technology for their support and co-operation.
