RAMON – Early Warning System for Flood Protection

With the successful completion of the RAMON project, GEODATA has achieved a significant milestone in modern flood protection. Together with the project owner, the Office of the Styrian Provincial Government (Amt der Steiermärkischen Landesregierung, Bundeswasserbauverwaltung), a comprehensive and future-oriented early warning system for flood events has been implemented.

Across the entire service area of the project owner – with a particular focus on Southern Styria – approximately 150 retention basins have been comprehensively equipped with advanced technology. This includes the installation of modern water level monitoring sensors, the integration of high-performance camera systems, as well as the planning and implementation of self-sustaining power supplies for each individual site.

The system will officially go into full operation on June 1^st, 2026. As soon as a retention basin begins to fill, an automatic alarm notification is triggered and transmitted in real time to all relevant authorities and stakeholders. The goal is to enable the fastest possible response in emergency situations and to activate the alert chain towards civil protection and disaster management authorities at an early stage. This allows critical measures such as evacuations and public warning notifications to be initiated in time.

The central software system for RAMON was implemented together with our partner Microtronics Engineering GmbH. The project was funded by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Climate and Environmental Protection, Regions and Water Management, as well as by the Province of Styria, Federal Water Engineering Administration.

With the upcoming flood season approaching, we look forward with great confidence to seeing the system prove itself in practical operation.
