A26 - Ramp tunnel Danube crossing

Complex tunnelling project for the ascents and descents of the suspension bridge of the A 26 Linz motorway running entirely in the mountain.

The tunnels north and south of the Danube – the later ascents and descents of the bridge from and to the national roads B127 and B129 were excavated by blasting. A total of 3,200 m of tunnel with an excavation volume of 370,000 m3 was constructed. In the four-lane sections with emergency shoulders, the cross-section is 200 m2 , in the area of junction structures (merging of ramps in the mountain) the cross-section is even up to 400 m2.

Pumped Storage Power Plant Limberg III

The Limberg III power plant is a pumped storage power plant of the Kaprun power plant group in Salzburg. The underground power plant with a turbine/pumping capacity of 2 x 240 MW is located directly next to the Limburg II power plant, which is currently in operation.

The Limberg 3 power plant is a pumped storage power plant with a total capacity of 480 megawatts. It will be built completely underground between the two existing reservoirs Mooserboden (water level 2,036 m) and Wasserfallboden (water level 1,672 m). The new structural, mechanical and electrical power plant facilities to be built are arranged in a system of caverns and tunnels. The tunnels to be excavated according to the NÖT have a total length of 2,240 m, the headrace tunnel to be excavated with TBM and the inclined pressure shaft have a length of approx. 4 km. The total excavation volume for the powerhouse cavern, transformer cavern and slide chamber is 74,500 m3.

Extensive geophysical measurements for the investigation of a planned flood relief tunnel in the South Tyrolean communities of Sesto and San Candido.

With the project “Storage power plant Kühtai”, the Tyrolean hydropower company “TIWAG” is implementing an increase in the expansion level of the existing Sellrain – Silz power plants. The project area is located in the province of Tyrol, approx. 30 km west of Innsbruck, at an altitude of approx. 2000 m above sea level.

Karawankentunnel 2nd tube

The existing Karawanken Tunnel – a border tunnel between the Republics of Austria and Slovenia on the A 11 Karawanken motorway – has a total length of 7.9 kilometres. Of this, 4,402 metres are on Austrian territory and a further 3,546 metres are on Slovenian territory. The full upgrading of the Karawanken Tunnel started in September 2018. The first step is the construction of the second tunnel tube, followed by the renovation of the existing tunnel tube.

Project description

The single-tube Karawanken motorway tunnel through the Alpine Karawanken mountain range is part of the European TEN-V corridor between Slovenia and Austria and is subject to an extensive expansion and modernisation programme. As part of this project, a second tunnel tube will be built and the existing tube will be rehabilitated. The Austrian section of the tunnel is 4.4 km long and excavation was started at the beginning of the project. The Austrian section of the tunnel is 4.4 km long and excavation started in 2018 and the construction lot limit was reached on 23 September 2021, while the remaining 3.6 km section of the tunnel is located in Slovenia and excavation started in August 2020. Breakthrough is scheduled for 2023. Both tubes and the cross-cuts to the existing tube are being advanced by blasting according to the NÖT.

We provide geophysical measurements that are incorporated into the overall geological investigation of the project. The sediments in the Rhine Valley, which have been pressed through the Ice Age, are investigated using two different geophysical methods. Up to a depth of 100 meters, seismic and geoelectic measurements can be used to draw conclusions about the given geology. The results of our geophysical measurements are compared with the existing drill cores and help to gain a better understanding of the regional geology.

S7 Fürstenfelderschnellstraße Tunnel Rudersdorf

For this challenging tunnel in soft soil we have been commissioned by ASFINAG to carry out the geotechnical measurements. The profile control with laser scanner and the control survey are also part of our scope of services.

Project description

The S 7 Fürstenfelder Schnellstraße (expressway) will in future run from the Riegersdorf junction (A 2) via Fürstenfeld to the Hungarian state border at Heiligenkreuz. The approximately 3 km long construction lot 8 with 2 separate directional lanes consists of an approximately 1 km long open cut construction method, an 1.8 km long Rudersdorf mining tunnel and an 0.3 km long groundwater basin. The tunnel tubes are partially located in the groundwater. The two mined tubes are driven exclusively in soft ground. The geology is mainly composed of clays, silt, sands and gravel. Due to the difficult geological and hydrogeological conditions, the tunnelling work will be carried out in partial excavations.

The Geophysical Department was commissioned with a detailed areal estimation of the soil parameters (elastic modulus dyn and shear modulus dyn) by means of seismic measurements in the area of the fill or landfill surface. The result was delivered as a 3D distribution of the dynamic parameters.

The rolls of a paper machine require a high-precision alignment, especially for parallelism. In order to meet these requirements, a high-precision network for SMR adapters over an area of 130 m x 25 m and a total height of approx. 20 m was created before the beginning of the assembly work. This network serves as the basis for all stakeout, setup and control surveying activities throughout the entire construction period. This procedure made it possible to precisely align the steel structure in advance, which made the alignment and assembly of the rollers much easier and saved a significant amount of time.

Another challenge was the installation of the Yankee cylinder. The lower half was levelled exactly in front of the hall to facilitate assembly of the upper half. After assembling the two halves, the entire Yankee cylinder was exactly aligned by using the prepared axle markings and removed.

Salt Mine Berchtesgaden and "Old Salina" Bad Reichenhall

Extensometers were supplied and installed for monitoring the rock conditions of individual mud-flush drilling plants  in the active mine. In a water gallery 3D displacements are recorded by an automatic measuring system.

Project description

The Berchtesgaden salt mine, which has been in operation since 1517, currently extracts approx. 900,000 cubic metres of brine per year in 30 mud-flash drilling plants. The size of the deposit currently being mined, with a salt content of approx. 50% in the rock, is 2.5 km x 1.5 km. Directly connected to the active mining there is a show mine.

For the geotechnical rock monitoring of individual mud-flush drilling plants, which have an extension of up to 160 m x 120 m and a height of up to 125 m, numerous multiple rod extensometers with up to 60 m individual rod length were supplied and installed. Tunnel-chain Granitztal

For this 6.1 km long tunnel section of the Koralm Railway in Carinthia, we were commissioned by ÖBB Infra to carry out the geotechnical measurements and control surveys. The comprehensive scope of services includes the delivery of geotechnical instrumentation, the measurement execution including optical 3D displacement measurements and an online system for track monitoring.

Project description

The approximately 6 km long tunnel chain runs as part of the Koralm railway between the Lavant and Jauntal valleys. It consists of the tunnel Deutsch-Grutschen (2.6 km), the enclosure Granitztal (0.6 km) and the tunnel Langer Berg (2.9 km). It is designed as a twin-tube tunnel system with cross-cuts every 500 m. In the Granitz Valley area, the railway line will be constructed using the cut-and-cover method, whereby the Granitzbach stream will be bridged using a special construction method. A ventilation structure and a rescue access is also located in this area. In the final stage, the tunnel tubes will be backfilled.

Port Said road tunnels

The twin tube 3.8 km tunnels with a further 800 m of cut and cover tunnel at each side of the Suez Channel were carried out using two slurry shield TBMs. The tunnels have a maximum overburden of 47 m, with a minimum clearance of 18 m below the seabed. Geodata supplied all the geotechnical instrumentation for the project and organised and trained the local measurement team for installation, measurement execution and evaluation on site.

Project description

The dual carriageway tunnels are located 19 km south of Port Said city and are an important part of the Suez Canal Region Development Plan, which will connect the Sinai with other Egyptian provinces to provide a gateway for investment opportunities and speed up the development of Sinai province. The tunnels will comprise twin tube 3.8 km tunnels with a further 800 m of cut and cover tunnel at each side of the Suez Channel. Tunnel boring was carried out using two slurry shield
TBMs with 13.05 m excavated diameter. The clear space between the tunnels is 30 m at the start of tunnelling, reducing to 17.4 m with increasing cover and improved ground conditions. The tunnels have a maximum overburden of 47 m, with a minimum clearance of 18 m below the seabed. Both launching shafts were constructed as five intersecting circular shafts with 25 m diameter.

We supplied all the geotechnical instrumentation for the project and organised and trained the local measurement team for installation, measurement execution and evaluation on site. The measurement program mainly included inclinometers, piezometers and levelling at the surface, 3D displacement measurements in the shafts, the C&C and TBM tunnels. Strain gauges were used in the segments and on the support elements of the open cut tunnels. Our software solutions EUPALINOS and KRONOS were used to evaluate and visualize the measurement results.

Project description

The 27.3 km long two tube railway tunnel is an essential part of the Baltic-Adriatic Axis (TEN corridor) in Austria and connects Lower Austria with Styria. After commissioning in 2026, the journey time from Vienna to Graz will be shortened by 30 minutes. The tunnel construction work is essentially divided into 3 areas:

  1. Tunnel section Gloggnitz: The 7 km long tunnel will be excavated and blown up from two construction sites: From the tunnel portal in Gloggnitz towards Mürzzuschlag and from the Göstritz access shaft towards Gloggnitz and Mürzzuschlag.
  2. Tunnel section Fröschnitzgraben: With a length of about 13 km, this middle section is the longest. Tunnel driving is carried out in two directions from the 2 access shafts that are more than 400 m deep. The approximately four-kilometer long section towards Mürzzuschlag is excavated and blasted, the approximately nine-kilometer long section towards Gloggnitz is created with two tunnel boring machines. The excavated material is taken to the nearby Longsgraben landfill. The cavern at the foot of the shaft will be converted into an underground emergency stop.
  3. Tunnel section Grautschenhof: The approx. 7 km long section will be excavated and blasted via two access shafts with two tunnel drives each -one per tube -in the direction of Mürzzuschlag and in the direction of Fröschnitzgraben.

Project description

The 33 km long railway tunnel is the centerpiece of the new high-performance line between Graz and Klagenfurt. It consists of two single-track tunnels with cross passages at 500 m intervals. The maximum overburden is 1200 m. An emergency stop is planned in the middle of the tunnel. The center distance of the two tunnel tubes is about 40 m, in the area of the emergency stop about 50 m.

Work on the approx. 10 km long exploration tunnels and shafts began in 2004. Work on the main tunnel has been in progress since 2009. The tunneling is carried out in cyclical tunnelling and for the most part with a total of 3 tunnel boring machines. Release for traffic is planned for 2026.

The VERBUND power plant Ybbs-Persenbeug was Austria’s first power plant on the Danube and is located in Lower Austria. The interior of the power plant has been undergoing modernization since 2014. One machine set (turbine and generator) is renewed each year, and all six vertical machine sets are to be replaced by 2022. This will significantly increase the power generation of the power plant. The resulting additional generation corresponds to the annual electricity consumption of 22,000 households.
The 460 m long dam wall holds back the Danube over a length of about 34 km and up to a height of 10.9 m. The dam will be built on the banks of the Danube. The volume of the reservoir is approx. 74 million m³, the targeted water level is 226.2 m above sea level.
The two locks are located at the left, northern end of the dam, each with a usable length of 230 m and a usable width of 24 m. 
The weir consists of 5 weir fields with a width of 30 m each and is located in the middle of the dam wall.

The full extension of the 8.3 km long Gleinalm tunnel comprises the construction of the second tube and the general renewal of the existing tube. The new tunnel tube was excavated by blasting and opened to traffic in June 2017. Afterwards the general refurbishment of the existing tunnel tube, which is almost 40 years old, will take place.

Construction surveying is taking place for the renovation of the almost 40-year-old tube.

Our Danish JV company SMT Denmark ApS was commissioned to carry out the entire geotechnical monitoring for the Cityringen project and the Nordhavnen extension. The scope of services includes the supply and installation of the geotechnical installation equipment with data acquisition and measurement, levelling and 3D displacement measurements (mainly with automatic total stations) as well as sound and vibration measurements. Particularly noteworthy is the implementation of our tunnel information system KRONOS, which handles the entire data management, processing and visualization, alarming and reporting of several thousand sensors.

Cityringen:

The Cityringen project creates a new ring line in the city center and consists of two 17.4 km long tunnels and 17 new train stations (two of which are transfer stations), all 30 m underground. From a technical viewpoint, the project is extremely complex because the city is at sea level. Tunnelling will be carried out by TBM. For the connection to the operation and maintenance center, tunnels will be constructed using the open construction method.

Nordavnen extension:
The extension consists of two TBM tunnels with a length of 1.8 km and 1.6 km, a rescue and ventilation shaft as well as an underground and an above-ground station.

Sydhavnen extension:
The two 4.4 km long tunnel tubes will be driven with two EPB shield machines. Along the route, 5 new underground station structures will be erected.
