RAMON – Early Warning System for Flooding

Project description

With the successful completion of the RAMON project GEODATA, in collaboration with the Styrian Provincial Government (Department 14, Bundeswasserbauverwaltung) has implemented a comprehensive and future-oriented early warning system for flood events.

Across the entire service area of the oft he project owner – with a particular focus on southern Styria – approximately 150 flood retention basins were fully equipped with advanced technology. This includes modern sensors for water level monitoring, high-performance camera systems, and a self-sustaining power supply for each individual site.

As soon as a retention basin begins to fill, an alarm is automatically triggered and transmitted in real time to all relevant authorities. The objective is to enable rapid response in emergency situations and to activate the alert chain towards civil protection and disaster management authorities at an early stage. This ensures that critical measures, such as evacuations or public warnings, can be initiated in time. The central software system was developed in collaboration with Microtronics Engineering GmbH and officially went into full operation on June 1st, 2026.

Place: Styria, Austria (focus on southern Styria)

Client: Styrian Provincial Government (Department 14, Bundeswasserbauverwaltung)

Commissioned by: JV Wiental Kanal WSKE West (BeMo Tunnelling – ÖSTU-Stettin)

Performance period: July 2025 to June 2026

GEODATA services:

GEODATA was responsible for the comprehensive planning and implementation of the system. As part of the project, all flood retention basins were technically equipped, including the installation of modern water level sensors and the integration of high-performance camera systems. In addition, self-sustaining energy supply solutions were designed and implemented for all sites. Another key component was the co-development of the central software system in collaboration with Microtronics Engineering GmbH. Furthermore, an automated alerting and monitoring system was established, enabling real-time monitoring and ensuring the rapid transmission of alerts in the event of an incident.
